Have you ever asked yourself as to why a wedding toast was so memorable? Why was it so different to the hundreds you have heard over and over again? Unfortunately, it is usually the ones that are off color or even topic that are remembered the most.

In theory, there are no wedding speech rules but in reality wedding speech etiquette is extremely important. People tend to remember wedding speeches for all the wrong reasons!

Below outlines wedding toast etiquette rules:

Format: the rules for the format of the speeches is essentially up to you. In general, the speech format is the Groomsman or MC does the introduction, Father of the Bride Speech is first, then Groom, the Groomsman and in more recent times the Maid of Honor follows and then of course the Bride Speech.

Swear Words: Don’t go there! Sometimes these words just slip out – that is ok, no need to beat yourself up too much for that. However, wedding toast etiquette steers clear of any profanity. Some people will be really put off by this – many of whom may have not met you before.

Intoxication: For sure, you will be slightly nervous, nothing unnatural. It will be tempting to sip on some wine or champagne to help you through the evening as you await your speech. Many people go overboard on the alcohol without even realizing it. You don’t want to be remembered as the person who slurred out the speech.

Negativity: This is another serious breach of wedding speech rules! It may be tempting to use this forum to let someone know that you have not been best pleased with them (for example a mother-in-law) subtly or otherwise. This is not the place to do this and won’t go down well with your audience. It is best to leave this alone.

Ghosts: If you are the Groomsman or Maid of Honor, it may be tempting in your speech to allude to ex boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, wives – don’t go there; it is against wedding speech etiquette. It may be amusing to a few in the audience but only to a minority.
